Since January 1, 1986, Aruba has been an independent and autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander is the official head of state of Aruba. The country is a parliamentary democracy and has a legal system based on that of the Netherlands.
Aruba has a rich culture with influences from various ethnic groups that live on the island. The many Caribbean, Latin American and European festivals, music, dance and art reflect the diversity. The country is known for its hospitality; the population is friendly and open.
